Reflexology for Babies and Children Article
11-Mar-2010
Reflexology for Parents, Babies and Children.
By Sue Ricks.

There is a growing popularity for receiving Reflexology for both assisting in becoming pregnant and then for mother and baby thereafter. People often follow a natural instinct to rub tiny babies’ feet, drawn to the perfect reflection of a person in miniature.

Reflexology can bring many benefits to both parent and child. The treatment only takes a few minutes and can do so much to benefit the baby including:
  • Helping to recover from the process of birth that can sometimes be challenging. Having reflexology soothes fractious babies and children and can calm and comfort them.
  • It cleanses their system and removes any “debris” that may have been swallowed with “knock on” effects. Many babies and children often pass a significant amount of “waste products” following a treatment! A healthy digestive system is paramount to a young child and their future health.
  • The infant’s immune system and all of their developing systems receive direct support via the skilful work of a fully qualified practitioner. There are specific reflex areas on the child’s feet that can be worked to maximise their growth and development. Some children who have been slow to develop have come on with the assistance of reflexology.
  • It calms and relaxes both the parent and child. This is good for both of you, as a happy child makes a happy parent! It helps your child to feed, connect, learn and play happily.
  • It can relieve pain and discomfort i.e. colic.

Reflexology for children can work wonders. I have been practicing for 20 years now and have treated my own children and numerous others. It is delightful to see the difference that this ancient skill can make for our young ones. Children love reflexology and especially Gentle Touch™ Reflexology. There are a number of different types of reflexology that have variety of levels of pressure. Gentle Touch™ Reflexology is very light and soothing and very comforting and effective for both parents, babies and children, (see www.g-t-r.org)

Children respond so well, because they are interested and often fascinated by their own feet. A few minutes of skilled attention to their feet can relax and balance a child. Probably the most important thing that happens is that children notice the subtle changes in their body and how they feel following a treatment. Health improves and so does behaviour and attitude. There is a direct link to their self-esteem and confidence with treatments. Children who have minor or even significant health challenges can greatly benefit.

Parents also get the support of the practitioner and can discuss any issues that they would like to share. It is valuable “me” time plus relaxing and healing. Reflexology helps the Mum’s body to return to shape and condition. It improves your ability to breastfeed (if desired) as it relaxes both mother and baby. Your energy levels are also boosted, as is your ability to cope, to feel more relaxed and confident.

I know of its benefits from my personal experience. When I had my son, he and I had quite a tough time when he was born. A very helpful midwife told me that I should rub his feet, as that “often brings babies on”. I did as I was instructed and it worked! This inadvertently was my first introduction to practising Reflexology!

Treatments can be in a clinic or arranged in your own home. An adult’s treatment will last about an hour, whilst a child may be anything from a couple of minutes for very young ones, about 15/20 minutes for young children and longer for older children/ teenagers.  It is important to find a fully qualified practitioner and many practitioners will tell you if they specialise in Baby and Children Reflexology.

Positive Health Magazine information on Reflexology for Babies and Children

The March 2010 issue of Positive Health Magazine has the following information on my new book.

Reflexology for Babies and Children

Reflexology for Babies and Children is a new book by Sue Ricks. A topic close to her heart, this book is the result of both personal inspiration from her own family and the practice in clinic. Over 18 years of research has led to the creation of this 132 page colourful and informative guide to providing the benefits of reflexology for babies and children.

The straight-forward approach and easy to understand text makes it suitable for both Practitioners and families wishing to treat their younger members. It includes step- by – step instructions, helpful advice on how to overcome many common conditions and knowledge on how to create suitable treatments for individual babies and children.

Reflexology for Babies and Children published by Barny Books, is available from all major bookstores, Amazon and from www.suericks.com. Sue may also be contacted on Tel 01509 214373.

  • Gentle Touch of Reflexology

Gentle Touch of Reflexology™ (GTR) is an extension of traditional reflexology practice, based on softer, more subtle techniques developed by Patricia Morrell. It works on the principle that the softer the touch the more powerful the results on a physical, emotional and energetic level.
  • Practical Advice for Reflexologists and Complementary Therapists

In this article the author offers advice on how Reflexologists and Complementary Therapists can improve the quality of their service to keep and attract more clients.
  • Reflexology Practice - Moving into the New Millennium

This article looks at the history and practice of Reflexology over the past two decades. In recent years, reflexology has come to be recognized more as a 'complementary' rather than an 'alternative' therapy to other types of treatment. It is also now accepted alongside a whole range of options that are available to people in GP practices, hospices, prisons, physiotherapy practices, etc.
Cincinnati and New York - Teaching and Family - May 2009
26-Feb-2010

In May 2009 I went to Cincinnati, Ohio to lead a series of training events and lectures on Reflexology for Babies and Children, in advance of my new book on the topic which was launched in September (see information later in this newsletter)

The Cincinnati Children's Hospital is an amazing place and is widely regarded as the 3rd most important Children’s hospital in the world, pioneering breakthrough treatments whilst providing outstanding family-centred patient care and training health care professionals for the future.

Cincinnati Childrens Hospital - Reflexology for Babies and Children Workshop
In addition to the 2 day ‘Reflexology for Babies and Children’ course I also taught Foot Reading to the Reflexology Association of Ohio, held an information evening about Gentle Touch™ Reflexology, spoke at some charity sessions and taught parents how to use reflexology for their babies and children at the Cincinnati Family Enrichment Center, as well as fitting in time to see the sites of Ohio and Kentucky!  What follows is my diary from the trip – I hope it gives you an insight into how powerful Reflexology for babies and children can be…

2nd & 3rd May 09: Babies & Children Reflexology Course

The two day course covered all aspects of treating Babies and Children with Reflexology, and was attended by a group of 9 self-funded attendees, including licensed massage therapists, the head of the Reflexology Association of Ohio, Debbie Hitt, and one delegate flying down from Canada to attend.
Day One saw the group attend a day devoted to reflexology for babies, from newborns to those aged 12 months, including training on both hand and foot reflexology.

Day Two  saw us work with children from 12 months to 16 years old.  Both days included the opportunity for delegates to practice the specific techniques learnt as well as giving the them an understanding of the best way to introduce children to the benefits of reflexology, language skills to build confidence, when to offer treatments and when not to, and how to create the right atmosphere for treating babies and children.
Reflexology for Babies and Children Course Kentucky & Ohio May 2009
Throughout the course I used real examples and children who had been in the hospital were given the opportunity to be treated.  I received some great feedback from the delegates:

Michelle commented that ‘the gentle touch approach is simple, helpful and fun to do!’ but most rewarding for me was seeing and hearing about the benefits for the children treated during and following the 2-day session. There are some very seriously ill children at the hospital and some of the specialist nurses the group were able to help a few of them with their newly learned skills.  These children included a little boy with Torticollis who had been unable to turn his head to the left, but following his treatment by Michelle using techniques learnt on the course, the little boy was able to turn his head to the left to look at her – it’s this type of result that makesme feel so lucky to be a Reflexologist.

Other success stories from the course included a child with gastroschisis (a condition where an opening in the abdominal wall allows the stomach and intestines to extend outside the body) the child had been very uncomfortable and not sleeping; following a reflexology treatment the child was noticeably more relaxed, happy and sleeping more comfortably.

I found teaching this course in Ohio so personally rewarding, it is wonderful to have the opportunity to show how reflexology can make such a difference to these children, and that such simple and effective techniques can transform their lives so quickly.

Monday 4th May 09

Today I taught 7 people in a teaching session at the Mercy Hospital in Western Hills, Cincinnati, and presented a lecture on Gentle Touch™ Reflexology introduction with the specific aim of understanding illnesses. The attendees were a great group of people, and it’s brilliant to be able to help them further with their understanding of using Reflexology to help people get better from their illnesses.

In the evening I got the chance to relax and enjoy my first ever baseball game! Even better the Cincinnati Reds won!

Tuesday 5th May & Wednesday 6th May 09

Today I had a break from teaching and enjoyed a day on the river with a wonderful steam boat trip on a beautifully hot day! Later in the evening Wendy Rolfe (Holistic Health Specialist at the Cincinnati Children’s hospital) and I spent some time planning further training and lecture sessions for the rest of the trip.
On Wednesday I got the opportunity to met up with some very distant family who I hadn’t met before – a great opportunity and a wonderful day!

Thursday 7th May 09

Today was the busiest day of them all, I started the day at the Cincinnati Family Enrichment Center - a resource and social centre helping parents stay abreast of topics that are important in raising a healthy and happy child in providing educational and fun programs for the whole family.  I held two talks for mothers, one for babies and one for toddlers, showing the parents how to help their own children through Reflexology. It is amazing to see parents using reflexology techniques with their own children and to see how quickly the babies responded to them.
In the afternoon I did a talk for 18 people at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Research Foundation on Reflexology for Babies and Children, many of those in the audience were licensed massage therapists.  An in depth questions and answers session allowed the audience to ask me their questions on treating seriously ill children with reflexology.

In the evening I got the chance to relax and enjoy my first ever baseball game!

Friday 8th May 09

Today was a day for one to one sessions, including consultations for course and lecture delegates and individual treatment sessions.

These individual sessions are great as they allow me to help people with specific issues, in particular one mum who had trouble getting her child to connect with her, by reading her feet and identifying the underlying issues I was able to show her techniques to increase their connection – it’s such a good feeling to be able to help!

Saturday 9th May 09

The focus for today was a 1 day foot reading training session for 13 people from the Reflexology Association of Ohio, led by Debbie Hitt. This topic was new to many of the people attending and prompted Tamara, Physiotherapist and Cranio-Sacral Therapy practitioner to comment ‘feet are the only part of my patient’s body that I will always see and be in contact with.  Thanks to Sue I learned this invaluable interpretation and understanding’.  I really enjoy bringing new topics to people’s attention – its part of what makes my job so great.

And that’s not all!

Following on from the success of this trip I went to New York in October/November spreading the Reflexology for Babies and Children message to a new audience, as well as going back to Cincinnati for another teaching session at the Cincinnati Children’s’ Hospital Research Foundation on Reflexology for Babies and Children and a training session for the Reflexology Association of Ohio on understanding illness and GTR, as well as other lectures too! What fun!

October 2009 Trip to New York and Cincinnati.

October 2009 Trip to New York and Cincinnati.

For the second time in 2009 I was lucky enough to be invited to teach in Cincinnati & Kentucky, Ohio, fantastic, as I was also able to go to New York and support my friends bravely running the Marathon and indulge in a spot of sight seeing as well.

Following is an account of my trip I hope you find it interesting and informative.

Thursday 22nd October 2009
My friend Anne and myself arrived safely in Cincinnati after almost missing our connection in Houston due to a delayed flight, having had to run through the airport and then be safely delivered at our departure gate on a travel buggy at the very last minute!

Friday 23rd October 2009
To give us time to recharge our batteries after our long journey we took this day off and visited the Taft Art museum, and indulged in lunch at the restaurant to celebrate Anne’s birthday.

Saturday 24th October 2009
Today we were picked up by my newly found relative who I met on my last trip in May, Martha and John who took us for a drive around Kentucky where we saw the tobacco leaves drying in the barns and enjoyed a proper American breakfast. We stopped off in the truly amazing place of Rabbit Hash Creek on the banks of the Ohio River and its famous General Store, which has been working since 1831. A brilliant day!

Sunday 25th October 2009
An early start today as the proper work begins. Up at 5.30am to drive to Dayton to present  ‘Understanding Illness and Disease’ for 16 members of the Reflexology Association of Ohio (RAO). Some of the points we covered included looking at how emotional well being affects physical well being, and how underlying issues can be the root cause of physical symptoms. We received some great feedback from the delegates, all of which enjoyed the session. We then enjoyed dinner at the hotel after a thoroughly rewarding day.

Monday 26th October 2009
Today I did individual treatments in the morning and then in the evening I ran a class on Advanced Foot Reading explaining the links and relationships between the feet, energy and chakra systems to reflexologists from the Ohio area and members of the Reflexology Association of Ohio. This was a follow on session from the course I taught for these delegates in May. This time we went into more depth about the finer details of Foot Reading which seems to really engage the audience as they thought that a 3 hour session wasn’t enough!

Tuesday 27th October 2009
This was the day that  I taught a basic Foot Reading Workshop to a French group of 18 delegates, followed by a fantastic lunch of fine French cuisine. This course was at the request of one of the delegates from one of the previous sessions I taught in May, it was fantastic to be asked back to teach it to others! In the evening I had dinner with Wendy Rolf Holistic Health Specialist 11 at the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital to co-ordinate the following day’s workshop content.

Wednesday 28th October 2009
Today I was lucky enough to visit the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital again. This hospital is ranked the world’s number 3 Children’s Hospital and treat seriously ill children from all over the world. This was another amazing opportunity to teach Gentle Touch Reflexology (GTR) for Babies and Children, as well as to teach additional GTR techniques to 18 of the staff at the hospital (some of whom attended my previous workshop in May).

Thursday 29th October 2009
Today I met up with another distant relative in Cincinnati, Bob, who took me to see the wonderful autumn colours of the Cincinnati area and we had lunch at a wonderful bookstore, where I also had the chance to discuss my new book Reflexology for Babies and children with the store.
In the evening I held a talk on Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) for about a dozen complementary practitioners and associates. NLP can produce some fantastic results for individuals, on this course we had one lady making a big adjustment to how she viewed her own situation and the things she could do to improve her life. I really enjoy teaching NLP and the great results it can give.

Friday 30th October 2009
Today we flew to New York to meet up with our friends running the Marathon

Saturday 31st October 2009
Today is Halloween which is a big deal in America, everywhere we went people were dressed up in amazing costumes, we had a day sightseeing today including Staten Island, the Statue of Liberty and the Word Trade Centre site. We also had time to indulge in a little shopping at Macy’s. The city is packed as there are so many people running the marathon – a really vibrant and buzzy feeling!

Sunday 1st November 2009
Marathon day! We supported Cathy, Liz and Nicola our friends from the UK, and managed to see them twice as they ran – amazing given that there are so many people there! All 3 managed to do great times for the run and we are so proud of them. In the evening we met up for dinner at Ellen’s Starburst – a fantastic restaurant where the waiters sing songs from the Broadway shows whilst serving dinner!

Monday 2nd November 2009
Working again today, I did some treatments before meeting another relative for lunch. It was great to catch up before a quick change to get ready for a special trip out to the Metropolitan Opera to see Aida. We had a fantastic time there. It was all so impressive, the building, the people and the performance.

Tuesday 3rd November
Today we just had time to squeeze in a lecture on Foot Reading.  This was organised through one of the ladies, Tamara, who attended one of my May workshops in Cincinnati – amazing how the word about GTR spreads! The talk was on Park Avenue – a very glamorous place for doing this, just down from Central Park! Afterwards we took a New York yellow taxi over to meet another relative for lunch before flying home.

What’s next?
We had a fantastic time in the US and its really great to meet so many people and to spread the word about GTR, Foot Reading and NLP to some new audiences. In 2010 I will be going back to Cincinnati for more teaching and then to Toronto, New York and Ireland to teach more reflexology sessions!

So What is Gentle Touch Reflexology?
12-Mar-2010
So What is Gentle Touch Reflexology?

All forms and methods of reflexology are wonderful and can bring some excellent results with both minor and major conditions. But did you know you can choose which type of reflexology you have? Every year people try reflexology for the first time. However, what is not commonly known is that there are a number of different methods and types of reflexology. These range from the use of implements using a hard pressure to an ultra light massage. Most reflexology practitioners in the UK use the Ingham Method based on the original work of physiotherapist Eunice Ingham and Dr William Fitzgerald. Both of these pioneers used a very firm hard pressure on the feet that achieved good results but could be very uncomfortable, and most practitioners following their original method will be using a medium to firm pressure. Some people may have tried reflexology before and found that it was uncomfortable for them and so, when they hear that a more gentle method exists, they may find that they like this better. Fortunately, everyone can now select the method that suits him or her best.

Gentle Touch™ Reflexology is a specific method within which the practitioner tailors the treatment to your individual lifestyle and conditions and provides you with an experience that feels like a very relaxing foot massage. However, its’ simplicity belies the power and effectiveness of the treatment, as Brenda found out when she tried it for the first time, saying “I have had treatments before that I enjoyed, but nothing had the effects that Gentle Touch™ Reflexology had. She just massaged my feet and I floated out of the session!”

This treatment is different to some other forms of reflexology as the philosophy behind it indicates that the lightest of touch should be applied to both feet at the same time; rather than one foot and then the other as would usually be the case. This is the method that was used in the first clinical trials of reflexology on patients who had hip and knee replacements. I took part in those trials that showed the effectiveness of this treatment for those who had surgery. This method of treatment is perfect for those who like a gentle and supportive approach and it can be applied to either the feet or hands with equal effectiveness. Many clients have a definite preference for one or the other because some people like their feet to be touched, and some cannot entertain that and so would choose Hand Reflexology instead.

Gentle Touch™ Reflexology has risen in popularity over the last twenty years following the success of the treatments and has become the preferred choice for some. Previously the general perception was that all reflexology was the same and yet now we know that it is not! So you can now put your best foot forward and choose the method that’s right for you. Enjoy the delights and benefits of Reflexology.

Three Steps to Enjoying Life
12-Mar-2010
Three Steps to Enjoying Life – Sue Ricks’ First Book

Living with dyslexia has been a real bonus for some and a nightmare for others. During childhood the issues around dyslexia are many and varied, however I used my childhood experiences as a starting point for my first book; Three Steps to Enjoying Life, published in 2007.

My motivation for writing began when I realised that the strategies that I use myself are useful to others too. I’m so pleased to share my simple plan with those who wish to enjoy life more or maybe are finding life a bit of a challenge.

My early experiences of Dyslexia had a harsh effect on my self esteem until I realised that I could choose to be limited by this condition or rise above it. Many people find life hard, feel overwhelmed or are natural worriers and so my clients are now offered a range of complementary treatments plus the chance to talk through things.

Sarah, a busy local mum of two under threes, says that book and help has been like a breath of fresh air. She now is so much happier, has a whole new way of coping and is much calmer. She laughs saying “the boys think I am alright now! I have stopped getting on at them all the time”.

The practical and easy to use plan is now being introduced into therapy practices up and down the country. Friends, family, clients and students are keen enthusiasts of the technique. Julie a local medical professional recently said that she will always tell others about the Three Steps to Enjoying Life as it seems so obvious, but one that she did not know before.

How to get your copy
You can order copies of the book directly from Sue through this website (click here for more info).  The book is also available from bookstores such as Waterstones and WH Smiths: Title - Three Steps to Enjoying Life, Author - Sue Ricks, ISBN 978 1 903172 78 0

Reiki – Why is it so popular? Who benefits?
12-Mar-2010
Reiki.  Why is it so popular? Who benefits?

What is Reiki really?

Is Reiki about healing, or is it really about being the person that we are meant to be?
Reiki is becoming more popular as many find that it has something lovely to offer them and their lives. Some fabulous changes have taken place for people after doing Reiki workshops or receiving treatments. One vibrant lady who loved life but struggled with work colleagues found that they could get on. A shy young man realised that he could really do what he wanted in his career. Both went from strength to strength, having attributed their new way of living life to their Reiki workshop and treatments.

Some Reiki facts.
  • Reiki is pronounced “raykey” and means “universal energy / life force”
  • It is suitable for anyone and everyone.
  • The purpose of Reiki is to assist everyone with personal and spiritual growth, including healing.
  • The origins of Reiki i.e. in the ancient Sanskrit teachings, however it was “discovered or re discovered” by Mikado Usui.

People can learn how to use and give Reiki to others
 or
receive a treatment from someone who practices Reiki.

Learning Reiki

Anyone can learn and benefit from Reiki. There are three levels – 1st degree (level one), 2nd degree (level two) and finally Reiki Master. A Reiki Master can assist others to receive and learn how to use Reiki.

Anyone can learn how to give and receive Reiki either for their own benefit or for using with their family, friends, or contacts. A Reiki Master will do an attunement during a workshop and will give full information, advice, guidance plus tuition according to the level being achieved (i.e. level 1 , 2 or Master)

People can choose to go to any level that is right for them. Everyone starts with Reiki 1. Reiki 2 follows this for those who wish to progress and some will continue even further and become a Reiki Master themselves.   A Reiki Master can only pass on an attunement for any level. For more information, see details about Reiki and workshops on our website - suericks.com

First Degree is for all – a personal growth and development tool that aid personal healing. You can do Reiki for yourself and practice on others too.

Second Degree – this is often undertaken about 3 months after the first degree (but can be longer if you prefer). This is often regarded as practitioner status and includes the next attunement plus information on healing for others and distance healing too.

Reiki Master – this is for those who wish to have access to and learn about being a Reiki master. It includes the Master attunement and much more involved energetic work and practices. Masters may also learn about the teaching process and passing on attunements although many do their Master just to have access to the energy and may not wish to pass on attunements.

During the Reiki attunement workshops you will learn many things that may enhance your life. You will also receive an attunement for your first or next level of Reiki. For many it is life changing experience and one that you greatly appreciate.

There is misconception that you have to be a healer to “do” Reiki but this is inaccurate. Anyone can receive, benefit or “do” Reiki but it is essential to get thorough training that is well explained, supportive and it takes time to go through the essential concepts. Mikado Usui originally introduced Reiki to others and very often it was passed on to others whenever and wherever he was; so some of his teachings were done in the local drinking house, i.e. the pub!

Receiving Reiki

Reiki is excellent for physical problems, emotional challenges and for the improvement of energy levels. It is also wonderful for personal growth and development.
It can be helpful in all types of physical challenges i.e. :

  • Joint pain
  • Stress and tension
  • Low energy levels
  • Back and neck pain
  • Circulation problems
  • Skin problems
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Infertility
  • Headaches
  • Bowel problems

 A treatment

You may sit on a chair or lie on a couch for the treatment. Reiki can be done anywhere at any time. Sometimes the person using Reiki will hold their hands over the part of the body affected or place their hands over any area(s) to assist the energy flow through out the body. There are a number of specific areas (Chakras) that directly affect the energy systems of the body. Working on these areas can really assist people on all levels (physically, emotionally and energetically).

You remain fully clothed throughout the treatment. Sometimes it may be helpful to touch an area i.e. Knee etc – in all cases you will be asked if that is okay and full decency is always totally observed. It can feel very relaxing and soothing. Everyone responds to Reiki in his or her own unique way. Some people feel heat, warmth or “activity” in the area requiring assistance. Other sensations that can be felt range from tingling, ripples of energy, and something like a “magnetic” feeling.

Who benefits from Reiki?

When is the best time to have or do Reiki?

If you are thinking about Reiki, or having Reiki, then it is probably the time for you to take it further. In my experience many people turn to Reiki when they are at a time in their lives when they are ready to move on or let go. It may be that you have met someone who has been using or receiving Reiki and noticed the pleasant changes and then to want some of that”. One person I know who came to Reiki at a time in their life when it was simply “time”. He had watched a colleague change and grow in enjoyment of life and seen the difference it made and that was the trigger to learn about Reiki for himself. It may be that you are striving to improve your life and want a supporting hand. This is the perfect time to get to know more about Reiki. The teachings of Reiki can really enhance your life and give you knowledge, support and also comfort. When people ask me “when is the right time?”, I simply answer “you will know!”. I mean that the fact they are asking the questions indicates that they will discover the right time for themselves.

How can it help, what can you expect?

Reiki can be excellent for physical healing and also for emotional healing too. Sometimes it is the right time to move of or let go. May be this is a time of life change i.e. the children are leaving home or maybe coping with a bereavement. These are examples of ideal times to receive the soothing and assisting qualities of Reiki. Sometimes it can be challenging as emotional issues are realised and can be dealt with, however most clients and students report the transition to a better place and are delighted with the results.

Reiki can assist people who are experiencing a change in their lives i.e.:

  • Coping with Grief
  • Building confidence
  • Relationship difficulties and changes
  • Building self esteem
  • Ideal for children (or adults) who are being bullied
  • Excellent for stressed executives
  • Perfect for those changing direction i.e. new job, divorce, redundancy etc.

Reflexology Association of America (RAA)
15-May-2010
The Reflexology Association of America (RAA) conference is going great. We are here in Denver having met some amazing people from so many states, Alaska, California, Florida and beyond.
There is terrific stand on the Pioneers of Reflexology with so many of the original items belonging to Eunice Ingham. Dwight Byers is here and we even managed a photo opportunity! NachiSanchez  has been showing me Eunice Inghams’s original typewriter ,letters to her from Joe Shelby Riley and some of her hand written teaching notes. What a prized collection, apparently gained from being in the right time at the right place. Nachi told me that he was on one of Dwight Byers courses and went for a walk at lunch time and saw a garage sale with some items that seemed to relate to reflexology. Another gentleman bought most of the items (Nachi is still looking for him!) and so Nachi bought an ancient couch and took it back to the class. Dwight saw the couch and recognised it as his aunt’s couch (Eunice Ingham)!

I have met so many passionate reflexologists who have so much to offer and it continues to inspire me about how much good will there is in the world. So many gifted people with wide ranging abilities to help others (and themselves).

There are some superb speakers here:

Reflexology for the Elderly
23-Jul-2010

Reflexology for the Elderly.

Reflexology is superb for people of all ages.  Over the years many individuals who have been in pain, discomfort or lacking in mobility have turned to Reflexology for relief.

There are many kinds of complementary therapies that can help and Reflexology can be one of the most effective.  The current situation is that more people than ever before are moving into retirement age and are wanting to maintain or improve their health, they are not taking “it is old age” as an answer to aches and pains. They are turning to various different treatments to support their own health. Reflexology provides a marvelous opportunity to support their immune system, increase flexibility and also increase mental agility and memory. Many have been prescribed a multitude of medicines that may have side effects and unwanted downsides, even though they are necessary.  Some are finding that holistic treatments offer an alternative form of protecting and improving their physical, mental and emotional health.

There are a number of different types of reflexology and although the public very reflexology as one subject, there are in fact a variety of different way in which reflexology can be practiced and received. These vary from the Ingham method as lovingly given to us by Eunice Ingham (regarded as the Mother of Reflexology), to VRT (vertical Reflex Therapy where the client may be standing for some of the treatment, through to ART (advanced and heavier pressure reflexology and also Gentle Touch™ Reflexology (GTR).  Each person can therefore choose which type of treatment that suits their preferred style of treatment. In Gentle Touch ™ Reflexology (www.g-t-r.org) the client will receive a very light, soothing and flowing treatment that is suitable for those with fragile skin and tender feet of hands.

The elderly may be experiencing many common complaints such as arthritis, tiredness, lack of muscle strength or control, constipation, or insomnia. Anything that can help to alleviate symptoms is a good thing. Reflexology may be the answer for increasing numbers of people who are now willing to give it a try.

Reflexology is all about working with the individual at all levels and working to support their own innate capacity to heal. It is not about providing temporary relief or just masking the symptoms. Reflexology is about supporting everyone to be able to make the very best of their own capacity to heal and balance themselves.  The very essence of Gentle Touch Reflexology is about working at the level of where the problem or issue has stemmed from.

Reflexology is suitable for all ages and is especially useful to those who are experiencing aches, pains and lack of energy. People who have had reflexology treatments have reported that they have much less joint discomfort and find it easier to walk or mange stairs, they have notice that their circulation seem better and that they have improved sleep patterns too.

A reflexologist will work with the person’s hands or feet in order to access the reflex points that are found in both areas. Every area and system of the body has a corresponding reflex point that is found in the foot or hand.   The stimulation of these areas with the appropriate pressure can bring about some amazing results. The aim is to work in partnership with the client who has chosen to have reflexology treatment and to provide a tailored treatment that is created according the specific requirements of the client and their condition(s).  Reflexology works to help each person and their body towards a state of health, well being and comfort. It is appropriate for most people, even when a person is considerable ill health. Properly trained and insured practitioners will work knowledgeably to provide a personal treatment plan to help each person specifically.

One of the most welcome benefits is often a feeling of contentment and relaxation.

Clients have reported that Reflexology has provided help and assistance for people with poor digestion, arthritis, and anxiety.

See research information at http://www.reflexologyresearch.net

A fully qualified reflexologist will work through all the necessary areas to support their client throughout the treatment. All areas will be treated including the pituitary, heart, lungs, solar plexus, spine, digestive organs, adrenals and kidneys. Some clients may notice areas as they are treated, however with Gentle Touch ™ Reflexology the treatment is so soothing that may clients fall asleep. All reflexology treatments can offer some excellent result and many experience a greater feeling of comfort and relaxation.

As our society gets older and a higher percentage of us are moving into “protirement” or “retirement” it makes sense to use something as simple as a hand or foot massage to ease aches, pains and problems. It has been found to help client lower their cholesterol level, blood pressure, or even reduce the amount of pain relief medication required after operations or procedures.

Many people have found that one of the greatest benefits is in mobility and state of mind.  Clients report that they feel more flexible, more confident in walking or even running and also additionally they feel calmer more relaxed and have a more positive out look.  Experiencing a number of consecutive treatments can increase the benefits no end. A one treatment is good however a few treatments over a period of time may gain better results.

During the time of one of the biggest changes to our way of living there are increasing numbers of people who in the past would have been consider old who are now out and about being highly active and want to stay that way. They are working, running around after grand children or taking adventure holidays in the mountains! These are just the people who are reveling in the opportunities that Reflexology can provide for them.

Likewise the health care systems are keeping more and more people in better health into much older years. The average age for both men and woman are increasing all the time. Homes for the elderly or retirement villages are growing in number; they are providing homes, care and security for millions. The need for providing quality care with reflexology is evident. People are gaining great opportunities for increasing well being, emotional support and physical improvements all the time. Even when clients are bed ridden there is much that reflexology can provide.  Sometimes a Hand Reflexology treatment may be more appropriate for the elderly.  We know that relatives are now requesting reflexology for their loved ones and more homes are considering the health and financial benefits of using the services of a qualified reflexologist.

Reflexology can be of great assistance to people of all ages. Fortunately the benefit to those of advancing years is potentially immense. It is great when something as simple as a skilled Hand or Foot Reflexology treatment can make such a difference

Are You, or your Child, the Same as a Baby Cow?
08-Jun-2010
Association of Reflexologists Logo
We have all heard the sensible advice about taking care of our bones by drinking milk and yet how many people also suffer from sinus problems, general nasal congestion and a blocked nose. All of these could be related as more and more people are becoming sensitive to dairy products.

When I started my career in reflexology and found Gentle Touch Reflexology (www.g-t-r.org) within complementary therapies, I had absolutely no awareness of the problems caused by dairy intolerance and yet I had a son who was experiencing many of the symptoms! No one told me that the problems that my baby was experiencing could be as a direct result of me eating dairy products while I was breast feeding or as he grew older when introducing him to baby yoghurts etc.

If you or your children are experiencing any prolonged or repeated symptoms of
blocked sinuses, facial pressure around your sinuses, ear aches or repeated infection, these could be a signal that your body is trying to tell you that it is not coping with the milk products from your food.

Here are some of the ways in which the dairy intolerance can show up, these include:
  • Headaches
  • Nasal congestion
  • Poor hearing
  • Rogue “tummy” aches
  • Repeated colds,
  • Throat infections,
  • Tonsillitis
  • Snoring
  • Aching
  • Eczema
  • Ear infections
  • Facial Pain

All of these symptoms are especially noticeable in children and yet also common in adults. Many people go for years and never know that the problem is because they are eating diary products.

A friend of mine came to see me for a consultation and was complaining of low energy, lack of concentration, repeated sore throats and what she described as a ”full head”. As a reflexologist I was able to see from her toes that she was showing the usual indications of sinus problems and sensitivity to dairy products. She had never considered this as a possibility and told me that she regularly ate cheese, drank milk and had yoghurt every day with her packed lunch.

It is common for people to have no idea that a degree of sensitivity to dairy products could be affecting their health. If you have always eaten food that contains dairy products, neither you, nor your body, know what life is like with out them. In her case she found that her health, energy and immune system soared once she restricted her dairy intake.

Mother Nature made milk from the cow for baby cows and we are not baby cows! So it is not surprising that some humans cannot tolerate the milk of another species. For those who can tolerate it, milk and milk products are a wonderful addition to a wide range of foods available, but for those who have problems with dairy products it can be a real hindrance to their health.

Over the years I have found that an increasing number of children and adults have been experiencing health problems, often challenges that they have had to put up with for years. It is always a good idea to ask a health professional for their advice and guidance.

You may find it helpful to give your body a chance to live without any dairy products for a short while and see if you (or your child) feel any better. If anyone has any level or degree of sensitivity, then simply giving it a break from the overload to your immune system, can give your body a chance to get better. Any long term dietary adjustments should be done under the care of an appropriately qualified health professional.

Reading the labels on anything that you buy and paying attention to the ingredients of anything that you eat when you are out can do much to help your health.
Products to be aware of include:
  • Milk or milk derivatives
  • Casein
  • Lactose
  • Whey

Foods to pay attention to and consider avoiding:

  • ·      Milk
  • ·      Cream
  • ·      Butter
  • ·      Margarine- including all spreads – look for the labels that say dairy free
  • ·      Yoghurt
  • ·      Ice-cream
  • ·    Desserts i.e. instant whip etc
  • ·    Cakes
  • ·    Biscuits
  • ·    Sauces
  • ·    Any processed foods/meals.
  • ·    Chocolate

Some other things that contain milk really surprised me – so check the labels of everything including:
  • Bread
  • Sweets
  • Cooked meats
  • Crisps/savoury snacks

There are lots of great alternatives to dairy products including Soya, rice or goat’s milk, soya yoghurts and ice-cream. Dairy-free margarine and even plain chocolate instead of milk chocolate!

I know that people drink milk as a source of calcium, but did you know that there is more available calcium in cabbage than milk. Eating green leafy vegetables can be a great source of calcium for you, as can soya beans, sardines, walnuts and dried beans.

If you have been suffering from any of the symptoms that may be related to eating dairy products, you can get extra help to clear your system by having a treatment of reflexology or Hopi Ear Candles. Always ensure that your practitioner is well qualified, as thorough training is necessary to care for you properly.

The benefits can be wonderful for those who have been experiencing problems. Sometimes people have had the conditions for so long that they do not know what it is like to live without them. For some people it is normal to always have a blocked nose or be full of catarrh. Some people have always had mucous that just trickles down their throat and cause an early morning cough. If life has always been like that then they can be delighted if it goes away. As my client said “I had no idea I was badly affected until it all stopped. What a relief to be free of it all and feel so well. I did not know I felt unwell until now, as I feel so healthy and active. Finding out about how dairy products affected me has changed my life”.
